“There are many different stories and forms of love in the drama, and I hope the viewers can also heal their own wounds following them,” Kim said –The Korea Herald

Netflix recently released a South Korean drama called “It’s Okay to Not be Okay,” and it has been the latest buzz. The drama is described as a “healing romance that resembles a storybook fantasy.” Besides being your typical romance drama, the series takes a better understanding of healing from mental health issues. There aren’t many K-dramas that shed light on mental health issues such as autism, dementia, and antisocial personality disorder.

Not your typical fairytale romance

On top of the drama’s emphasis on mental health, you’ll also fall in love with the cast. Actor Kim Soo Hyun plays the role of Moon Gang Tae, a healthcare worker at a psychiatric hospital who holds a mysterious past. Oh Jung-Se’s plays the role of Moon Sang-Tae. He is Moon Gang Tae’s older brother, who portrays a stunning performance of the reality of being an autistic adult.

Actress Seo Ye Ji plays Ko Mun Yeong, a popular children’s book author who suffers a dark past with antisocial personality disorder. Throughout the show, she appears to be bold and confident. However, throughout the drama, you’ll find out her defense mechanisms towards situations and conversations are a result of her traumatic past.

In the drama, Moon Gang Tae and Ko Mun Yeong develop a romance while healing each other’s psychological and emotional wounds. The show doesn’t romanticize or stereotype mental health issues. Thus, it is an important and sensitive topic that is portrayed in each episode. Human emotions are portrayed beautifully throughout, as it sheds light onto emotional healing and trauma that we don’t emphasize enough. We have our own life story, past, and journey, which plays into the setting of one’s mind as a result of traumatic and emotional healing.

What are you waiting for? Go check out this touching emotional K-drama. It is a pure and insightful masterpiece. From story, cinematography, to acting, everything is flawless. It’s a reminder that there’s no need to be embarrassed if you’re one of those who are seen as “peculiar” by conventional standards. It is being open-minded to those who have mental issues. Everyone is fighting their own demons. Everyone has their own fair share of dark days. Just remember, it’s okay to not be okay.
